In an era of climate change and global economic instability, Small Island Developing States (SIDS) face unique governance hurdles. Aruba and the wider Caribbean must translate the UN 2030 Agenda (SDGs) into a local reality where small-scale dynamics and personalized networks often complicate policy implementation. This module provides the "insider’s perspective" necessary to bridge international theory with practical, island-based solutions for good governance.
Target Audience: This module is ideally suited for ambitious public sector professionals, NGO leaders, and private sector strategists working within island jurisdictions who seek to increase their impact on sustainability and democratic innovation.
Learning Outcomes Upon completion, you will be able to:
1. Analyze the complex relationship between "islandness," non-sovereignty, and effective governance.
2.Leverage civil society to balance power relations between the state and the market.
3.Develop practical strategies to implement the SDGs and the SAMOA Pathway within small-scale jurisdictions.
Program Structure Held in Semester 1, Year 1, this module is delivered in a concentrated 6 week block. Classes are held on Saturdays and are focused on interactive lectures, Caribbean case studies, and translating global frameworks into Aruban practice. The course carries a workload of 4.5 ECTS and is held at the University of Aruba campus.

Requirements
• Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as Public Administration, Organization Sciences, Political Science, or a related social science discipline. It is specifically designed for professionals who have a basic understanding of governance structures and are looking to specialize in the unique socio-political and economic challenges of small island jurisdictions.
